Why does my Myotherapist use Dry Needling and what is it?
Dry Needling involves inserting very small acupuncture needles into the skin, muscles or ligaments in the body to create a response. The term “dry” refers to the fact the needle has no liquid being injected, rather the needle itself mechanically stimulating different body parts.
This technique has become an increasingly common technique used by Myotherapists and Physiotherapists alike. It can be used to treat a range of injuries and painful muscle and joint conditions. Our Myotherapists at Thrive Health Co. often use the technique to help address muscle tightness or tension, swelling or pain. It’s extremely effective as it targets specific trigger points. in the body. It disrupts bands of contracted muscle fibres, this is beneficial as it allows those muscle fibres to relax and let go of the contraction, therefore improving blood flow and oxygenation to the area, reducing muscle aches, increasing the length of the muscle and therefore improving range of motion for the affected joints.
Electro-Dry Needling has the same benefits of standard dry needling, in addition to stimulating the body’s endorphin release – endogenous opiods – to help decrease pain and sensitivity to the area being treated. Over a few sessions of this, the body gets better at responding to pain in the area and the treatment effectiveness increases and lasts longer, thus diminishing and sometimes eliminating symptoms and discomfort.
